Under good weather, the 3rd Annual Pig Tales Barbecue Festival took place. The fund-raising-cum-entertainment-cum cooking show is now on its third year, still with the mission of raising funds for the Harvin Clarendon County Library. The two-day event (Friday and Saturday) held at Manning Municipal Park served as a venue for showing off talent and cooking prowess.
The festival, which started in 2007, has raised more than $20,000 for the library in a span of three years. One of the pioneering groups that helped in organizing the event is The Item and the Friends of the Library. It is through these people that the festival has pushed through and still continues to serve the library. Jane Powell, the event organizer, said that the money that will be raised in the festival will be set in purchasing computers, DVDs, books and as a budget for other youth programs. The money will serve as an additional budget in promotion of youth's welfare.
The first day (Friday) of the festival featured 'Anything but Pork' competition. The Taste of Clarendon team from Manning emerged as the winner and the AgentOwned Realty team, also from Manning, wowed the crowd and sold the most number of tickets. Jake Buddin from AgentOwned team said that his mustard-fried venison gathered the crowd all night.
The second day (Saturday) featured a competition among 12 teams. The task is to cook the best hog. Pork-o-Butts of Indian Land pocketed $1000 cash and a trophy as they were awarded as the winner. The Redneck Cookers team from Elgin took the 2nd place and they went home with $350 and a trophy. They are followed by Mike's Catering of Dorchester, who was awarded with $250. All the participating teams are happy with the festival and said that they are happy to cook with and for the community.
The successful event sold more than 700 pounds of barbecue. In line with this, Rep. Cathy Harvin, D-Summerton, said that the event's success was because of the entertainment it brought. She also continued that good cooking is a good way of coming together as a community with a purpose, and that is to raise funds for the library.
